This idea of hearing our speech with more than two ears, the notion that we, as listeners, shape the meaning of a sentence, has fascinated many people. The statement, &quot;It&#039;s green,&quot; spoken by my husband in the passenger seat, can be heard as an instruction\u2014it&#039;s green, so go ahead; as a hint\u2014did you see that the light turned green?; as criticism\u2014typical woman, she slows down when the light is green; or as a personal comment\u2014&quot;You and traffic lights.&quot; Regardless of which way I choose to hear it, what seems important is that I have several options. My mood will change depending on which listening method I choose.<br \/>\nOnce you think about it, this four-ears principle suddenly makes sense, and it has certainly helped many people change an unwanted behavior. No matter what my passenger says at the green light, when I&#039;m in the car, I definitely have at least four wheels between the car and the road. I could also ask what options I have to deal with this situation. I can trust that the tire manufacturers have thought of everything, that my garage has checked the tire pressure, and that nothing bad will happen to me anyway because my life is blessed.
