Tires with tread and tires with the correct pressure. Monitoring tire pressure while driving is a helpful feature; aftermarket systems (TPMS, RDKS) are available and are often more affordable than a single factory-installed sensor. We quote below from an article... http://www.pnn.de/mobil/326299/ to stimulate thought about situations in which tire pressure becomes particularly critical.

Chaos in the rain
By Norbert Michulsky

How to drive away from aquaplaning in your car

Rain can suddenly become a challenge for drivers. If the water doesn't drain quickly enough from the asphalt, there's an acute risk of aquaplaning. "In aquaplaning, the tires lose contact with the road. Neither driving, braking, nor steering forces can be transferred to the road surface. In plain terms: The car is no longer controllable," says Roland Frisch, chief car instructor at the Austrian Automobile Club ÖAMTC in Vienna. Most accidents resulting from aquaplaning happen "due to an incorrect reaction.".

Aquaplaning occurs when, on a wet road, the front wheels of the car suddenly lose traction while driving too fast through large puddles or ruts. The tire tread can no longer channel the water to the edges of the tire. Even top-performing tires with excellent tread patterns, according to the ACE automobile club, do not offer a guarantee against aquaplaning.

In this moment of panic, many drivers react incorrectly, turning the steering wheel in an attempt to escape the dangerous situation. The steering wheel is, of course, very easy to turn when the car is hydroplaning because the tires have lost traction. "But as soon as the front wheels regain contact with the road, the car pulls to one side," warns Rainer Hillgärtner of the ACE (Auto Club Europa). The reason: The wheels are still turned after the previous ill-advised steering maneuver.

The most important rule when aquaplaning is therefore: always keep the steering wheel in its original position, simultaneously release the accelerator and depress the clutch so that the wheels can spin freely. "Only brake if absolutely necessary," emphasizes ÖAMTC expert Frisch. While ABS has made emergency braking in such a dangerous situation significantly less hazardous, there is no guarantee that there will be no unwanted vehicle reactions. Drivers of automatic transmissions should concentrate on steering and not attempt to shift into neutral.

To maintain control of the vehicle even in the rain, you should reduce your speed in good time and avoid abrupt braking or steering maneuvers. "Particular caution is required when changing lanes or overtaking if one side of the vehicle enters a rut," says Frisch.

Speed limits often include the suffix "when wet." But when is a road considered wet? "A road surface is described as wet when it has a complete film of water, meaning it's not just wet in patches, such as in ruts," explains Maximilian Maurer of the ADAC (German Automobile Club). In practice, you can recognize wetness by the road's reflective surface or by the distinct ruts left by a car ahead. You should also heed corresponding warning signs: "The additional signs 'when wet' below the speed limits are usually an indication that you're driving on a stretch of road known to be prone to aquaplaning," emphasizes Albrecht Trautzburg of the AvD (Automobile Club of Germany).

Regen braucht gute Reifen.
