\nMotorists complain about high fuel prices and the ever-increasing cost of driving. However, there are many ways to reduce fuel consumption and thus costs. The ACV Automobile Club is now drawing attention to this.<\/p>\n

In addition to an adapted driving style, tire pressure, for example, also has a direct impact on safety \u2013 underinflated tires with too low an inflation pressure deform more than necessary and therefore have a higher rolling resistance.<\/p>\n

The experts at the vehicle inspection organization GT\u00dc point out the consequences: Fuel consumption increases, tire lifespan decreases, and braking distances lengthen. Regular tire pressure checks are therefore essential. Correct pressures save fuel and ensure driving safety.<\/p>\n

What few drivers know: Tires contribute significantly to a vehicle's fuel consumption, accounting for up to 25 percent. This is primarily due to rolling resistance, which arises from tire deformation. Therefore, reducing tire rolling resistance can significantly improve fuel economy.<\/p>\n

Due to the vehicle's weight, car tires compress by about 10 to 15 percent in the contact patch, conforming to the road surface. The tread therefore changes its round shape and becomes flatter. This inevitable change in shape during rolling is only possible against resistance (rolling resistance) and consumes drive energy, which is converted into heat. This is why the tire heats up while driving.<\/p>\n

If the correct tire pressure is not maintained, the tire will compress even further, drastically increasing rolling resistance and heat generation. This can even lead to a dangerous tire failure. According to GT\u00dc experts, a pressure deficit of just 0.2 bar increases fuel consumption by around one percent, at 0.4 bar it's already two percent, and at 0.6 bar below the recommended value, fuel consumption increases by about four percent. The manufacturer's recommended tire pressure for your specific vehicle can be found on the fuel filler flap, on the inside of the driver's door, or in the owner's manual.<\/p>\n

A further financial consequence arises from decreasing tire pressure: the lifespan of the tires is reduced. A pressure drop of just 0.3 bar already decreases the mileage by 30 percent \u2013 a significant loss. Moreover, braking distances increase, thus also impairing driving safety.<\/p>\n

Therefore, we recommend checking tire pressure at intervals of no more than four weeks. To reduce rolling resistance, the recommended tire pressure can be exceeded by up to 0.3 bar. Increasing the pressure further would only negatively impact comfort, wear, and handling. Even short trips with cold tires result in high rolling resistance and thus increased fuel consumption. It takes approximately 30 minutes of driving for tire temperature and rolling resistance to reach normal levels.<\/p>\n
