In German, the word "Überwachung" (surveillance) sounds somewhat harsh. Perhaps that's why we prefer to say "monitoring" today. Service monitoring, telemonitoring, patient monitoring, environmental biomonitoring, water monitoring by waterworks, city monitoring, web monitoring, data monitoring, and, what interests us greatly, the monitoring of vehicle tires.
