Anyone who spends a lot of time online will occasionally come across reports about tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS). Often these reports describe failures of the TPMS systems installed by the vehicle manufacturer. Some car owners are so annoyed by the unjustified warnings from these pre-installed systems that they switch them off or have them disabled. This has led to a decline in awareness of TPMS in the past. However, we shouldn't necessarily behave like Oblomov's farmers, who beat their cows for straying into other pastures through broken fences.
We believe that retrofitting with a TireMoni system is a better alternative. The TireMoni tire pressure monitoring system sensors are screwed onto the outside of the valves instead of the valve caps and can therefore easily be transferred to winter tires. This saves a considerable amount of money compared to factory-installed systems. Furthermore, the batteries in the TireMoni system are easy to replace. Simply unscrew the cap, replace the battery, and you're done. With systems mounted inside the tire at the valve or on the rim, battery replacement is not possible. These systems are sealed and must be completely replaced when the battery is depleted. This is not only expensive but also environmentally unsound. Therefore, the sooner you switch to the external, direct-measuring TireMoni system, the better. Ah, one more thing: direct-measuring systems. Indirect-measuring systems, which derive their tire data from a differential calculation by the ABS system, will no longer be permitted in the near future (2012) due to an EU regulation. There's no reason to wait until then; a TireMoni system pays for itself within a year through fuel savings, accident prevention, and time saved on inspections. And, as an economist, you know that the sooner you achieve the ROI, the longer the money stays in your pocket.
