Dangers of tire pressure

„"Incorrect tire pressure is not only dangerous, but also costs money. This is because the lifespan of the tires decreases and fuel consumption increases.".
Often neglected, yet so important: the correct tire pressure. According to the expert organization KÜS, insufficient tire pressure is found in approximately 40 percent of all traffic accidents. Studies show that almost one in three drivers is driving with insufficient tire pressure due to negligence or lack of knowledge.

Due to natural diffusion, the tire constantly loses some air. However, if the pressure drops too much, the tire flattens and rolls with a larger surface area on the asphalt. As a result, the increased flexing causes the tire to overheat and, in the worst case, become so hot that it bursts. But even if it doesn't come to that immediately, insufficient air pressure leads to premature wear; the rubber becomes brittle and fragile. Just 0.4 bar too little reduces the tire's lifespan by about 30 percent.

Furthermore, incorrect tire pressure also leads to higher costs. A pressure deficit of 0.2 bar results in an increase in fuel consumption of one percent. With a deficit of 0.6 bar, fuel consumption rises by as much as four percent. CO2 emissions are correspondingly higher.

Therefore, tire pressure should be checked regularly when refueling. Ideally, this should be done when the tires are still cold, as warm air expands, resulting in increased pressure. The correct tire pressure for your vehicle can be found in the owner's manual or on information stickers inside the car, usually located in the fuel filler flap or on the driver's side door jamb.

This value is often specified slightly lower than optimal. Manufacturers use lower tire pressures to improve the vehicle's ride comfort. Therefore, the actual tire pressure can usually be 0.2 bar higher than the specified value. For heavy loads or longer journeys, it should definitely be increased by around 0.2 bar. It's important that the tire pressures are the same on each axle. However, they can differ between the front and rear axles. (Quoted from...) Tire Guide

The article recommends "applying the right pressure," and we support this recommendation. For over 15 years, tpm-systems has been working on the topic of tire pressure. With the TireMoni retrofit system, we have launched an electronic tire pressure monitoring system that can be used when switching between summer and winter tires. The TireMoni device displays pressure and temperature parameters inside the vehicle or on the motorcycle while driving – and it warns of pressure changes! This is important because it gives the driver potentially life-saving reaction time.
